U-15 team will practice Friday night from 6-8 p.m. at Mott; U-17 team will start next week

The U-15 team will hold its first practice of the season from 6-8 p.m. on Friday night at Mott Community College (same site as the tryout). Head coach Marcellus Miller will have a quick parent meeting prior to practice to answer any questions.

Because so many U-17 players will be out of town for Spring Break, that team will not hold its first practice until next week.

Practice schedule update: Because it has taken so long for spring to arrive (still waiting), gym time is very difficult to come by right now. Many spring baseball and softball teams that typically practice outdoors are practicing indoors for the time being.

Soon, we will have a regular practice night (or two) every week. Hopefully by next week our normal Tuesday night slot at Mott will open up.

Finally, in order to secure your spot on the team, please submit all or at least one third of the $450 team fee to your coach prior to our first tournament. The tournament schedule will be posted here by the end of the week.

MML U-16 update

Unfortunately, because of a much-lower-than-normal turnout at the U-16 level Monday night, we will not have a U-16 team this season. A couple of the best U-16 players at the tryout may be offered spots on the U-17 team.

We hope to get back to offering all three high school levels next season.

MML tryouts for 2014 will be held March 24 at Mott Community College

tshirtfront-1Tryouts for the Mid-Michigan Lakers will be held March 24 at Mott Community College in Flint. Tryouts will begin at 6 p.m., but players should arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and stretch. Arriving late will diminish your chances of making a team. (Scroll down for Mott’s campus map).

The cost of the tryout is $10.

The team fee for the spring/summer will be $450. Players are not required to make the full payment up front, but at least half of the season fee is due prior to the start of the first tournament.

Typically, teams practice 1-2 times per week for two hours either at Mott, The Cage Fieldhouse or Central Church of the Nazarene in Flint. Practice schedules are posted weekly.

We will update the schedule in the coming days. Typically we compete in seven tournaments including NCAA certified events in July.

We cannot say with any certainty what levels we will run with this season. That will be based on turnout. Players between the ages of 14 and 18 are welcome (no graduating seniors).

Looking forward to a great season,

Jared Field

U-16 White Team will not participate in NCAA tournaments

I’ve put this off as long as I can: The U-16 White team will not participate in NCAA tournaments this month. As of today, only four players are eligible to participate.

I will mail out $100 refunds to the parents of those players.

Like Coach Miller said in a prior post, this is uncharted water for us. We have never had to cancel NCAA tournaments due to lack of participation. It’s disappointing, embarrassing and everything in between, but it’s the right thing to do.

Have a great rest of the summer. Don’t waste your time with foolishness; be focused on getting better every day.
