HOLLAND, Michigan — The U-17 Mid-Michigan Lakers averaged nearly 80 points per game in last weekend’s Tulip Tip Off in Holland. The “Showtime” Lakers, we’ll call them, won three out of their first four games including a 10-point win over Camp Darryl that avenged a 30-point beatdown two weekends prior in Bellaire. Mike Shaw (Lansing Catholic) led all scorers with 25 points. Ahasuerus “Syro” McDonald (Flint Northwestern) added 24 points and Nate Sauvola (Grand Blanc) poured in 20.
Against Basketball Warehouse, Fred “it’s time to eat” Perkins (Burton Atherton) poured in 16 points with 15 rebounds in just one half of play.
The game was also important for the Lakers two point guards, McDonald and Zach Hurth (Lansing Catholic), who impressed at least one college coach with their ability to run the floor, find the open man, and lock up.
The Showtime Lakers went on to score 89 points against a running clock in a blowout against the Basketball Warehouse (and every player scored, by the way). The Lakers lost late to OAA Select in a hard-fought game that showcased the all-around ability of Sauvola, who led all scorers with 20+ points on an array of inside and outside buckets.
Great tournament, gentlemen. You play an entertaining brand of basketball and it’s going to be a pleasure to watch you guys for the rest of the season.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, THIS is how you finish in transition:
